"There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in."

o ano.

A workshop that rhymed with caffeine

Still in the ambit of the event Braga en Risco - Illustration Meeting, I was invited to do a live painting and also a small workshop with the kids and the fathers of the kids who still love being kids, to which I very much called "A workshop Which rhymes with caffeine". All this on November 13th.

Following the trend of my last live painting sessions, I went back once more to immerse myself in the world of unusual painting materials. I speak of coffee, reduced wine, saffron, sweet pepper, coal dust (...). And why I stubborn in this materials? Because they are fun, somewhat anarchic, beautiful, cheap / democratic, naturally harmonious, aromatic, disconcerting, and visually dynamic as they age on the canvas (a tribute to Oscar Wilde's The Portrait of Dorian Gray).

The inspiration for thus illustration came to me with great intensity from the words of the late gentleman Leonard Cohen - someone i always had a great affection - on the theme "Anthem", to whom i very humbly wished to pay a heartfelt tribute:

"There is a crack, crack everything
That's how the light gets in. "

This phrase has been for me a mantra to which I have lately come to survive the darkness and chaos that seem to be covering humanity once again.

This type of illustrations, made live and without a net, has a crude and experimental nature that I like very much. They are not and do not pretend to be finished products - quite the contrary - but rather a sketch of a future illustration and, above all, an exercise in personal liberation, because we grow up whenever we go outside the box. So, this is an image that I know, I will return one day.

As for the workshop, it was once again delicious, because once again the kids did not need me at all. What I want to do with these moments is not to teach anything in the broadest sense of the term ... it would be a great presumption to believe that I could teach anything to a free spirit. What I intend to do is to return to the children the immense pleasure of drawing, painting, and scribbling as purest and primitive pleasures. Twenty thousand years ago, our hairy ancestors marked this impulse stronger than the will on the walls of the caves. I do not want beautiful images (although they always appear ... whatever that means), I did not make them draw something previously designed by me, nor define a theme or even make comparisons or encourage competitions to see who is the best. That they already have plenty of, to give and to sell, in school.

It's the pleasure that I want to (re)visit. The pleasure of the textures, of the smells, of the seemingly casual spots, of the colors that harmonize naturally with each other, of the dirty hands, of the surprise with which we discover that there are infinite materials for drawing and painting, of get lost in the details of the marks that are printing on paper and most of the time we do not even notice it (try painting with some material, and then observe with a magnifying glass). And, above all, I want to plant the seed of the will ... The will to return often to this Place. Because it is in this Place that everything that comes next should rest.

If i can strum this rope in just one person,
I'll have won the day,
the month,
the year.
