Retratómatos

Retratómatos from Paulo Galindro on Vimeo.

Last October 9th (I know ... I know ... it's been a month and a half now, and I'm just talking about it now, but the days are stubborn, they don't have more than 24 hours), it was The D-Day in Calouste Gulbenkian. Shows, installations, workshops and concerts for all ages, there was a bit of everything from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
I had the privilege of integrating the activities of that day, being part of the Retratómatos team. You'll be asked what the hell is a Retratómato...

(Go ... ask ... I'll wait for you... I know you want to know)

Well ... a Retratómato is a very special machine, and that's why it makes very special portraits. A series of cardboard boxes (brilliantly designed by my great friend and equipment designer, Marc Parchow ... tcharan!) that hide in each of them an illustrator who, in this kind of spiritual retreat, has the function of drawing portraits. If this task already seems difficult (at least for me, I am not a portraitist), imagine that the portraits are executed on the sole and exclusive basis of the description made by the person portrayed in front of a mirror. Rigorous as his eyes (and his imagination, because to look is also to imagine) allow it. It is up to the illustrator, who has no visual contact with the picture, to orient and decode the descriptions made, translating the image that is forming in his head on a paper, using the materials of his choice. In a matter of fact, we all drew ... the one with the eyes and the mouth, me with my left hand. Success, therefore, depends on 2 persons. Sometimes I got close to the reality, other times I got so far away that I doubted if I should be selling Berlin balls on the beach.

It was a unique experience and much more strenuous than I could have imagined when I was invited to take part in this event.
All the portraits that left my hands were executed in charcoal on watercolor paper.
